As tempers rise across America in response to the Trump administration’s zero tolerance immigration policy it was only a matter of time before the lives of those who are responsible for enforcing the law found themselves the targets of threats. CBS news recently reported that the acting deputy secretary of homeland security warned their employees Saturday that there may be a heightened threat against them. The need for the heightened awareness of these threats was based upon threats that were made against specific DHS employees as well as an increase in general threats made against the Department of Homeland Security and its employees in general. While the sincerity of each threat is different it is agreed that each threat that is received at this point should be taken and treated as being a serious threat.
A message from Claire M. Grady says, “This assessment is based on specific and credible threats that have been levied against certain DHS employees and a sharp increase in the overall number of general threats against DHS employees — although the veracity of each threat varies. In addition, over the last few days, thousands of employees have had their personally identifiable information publicly released on social media.”
Employees of the Department of Homeland Security have been strongly advised to take a variety of precautions in order to better insure their safety at this time. Some of those precautions include but are not limited to not displaying their work badges out in the general public away from the office, being careful with what they choose to say when out among the general public, and being diligent about the caution that they use on social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter. DHS employees have also been warned to always keep their windows and doors locked while taking more notice of their immediate environment in and around their home or vehicles. If at any time one of their people feel unsafe they are encouraged to call 911 and alert local law enforcement of their situation. Department of Homeland Security even has a plan B for their employees if local law enforcement refuses to help and has advised that their employees contact Federal Protective Service.
A large number of those who are making the threats against employees of the Department of Homeland Security are protesters who either demand that immigrant families be reunited or they have taken a misconstrued view of exactly what it is that DHS employees do and they are seeking to promote their own political agendas. Thursday, WikiLeaks released a list to the general public that gave out detailed information on more than 9,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement employees. The detailed information includes personal information, job history, educational background, and city and state whey are based.
In a clear display that shows how dangerous some of these threats that employees of the Department of Homeland Security have been receiving Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had her dinner interrupted Tuesday by protesters as she tried to enjoy a meal at a Mexican restaurant. As scary as that incident could have been for Nielsen if one of the people who harrassed her while she tried to eat dinner had been in possession of a weapon it could have been a lot worse for her.
At the time of this writing I have not been able to find anything that shows the Democrats are trying to assist in protecting the lives of those who have only been doing their job. The fact that the Democrats have not spoken out against such threats to other government employees that come from their own supporters places the blood of anyone who is hurt on their hands.
